The global context

Emerging powers stand out as engines of optimism

Bar chart showing net view of past global progress over 20 years across donor countries, emerging powers, and LMICs & LICs, indicating mostly net negative views except for Indonesia and India labeled as 'Engines of optimism'.

Wave 2 findings confirm what we observed in wave 1: this is a time of ongoing global negativity, driven by both domestic and global concerns. This negativity is most pronounced in donor countries.

However, the inclusion of emerging powers in wave 2 reveals a more nuanced picture: India and Indonesia stand out as most positive about global progress – possibly reflecting their own recent experience of development.

Chart showing net view of past global and global health progress over the last 20 years by country groups, with green circles for global health progress and purple circles for world progress. Donor countries show mostly negative progress, emerging powers have mixed results with India positive, and LMICs & LICs show varying positive global health and mixed world progress.

In this context, health remains a source of greater hope.

As we observed in wave 1, there remains greater positivity and optimism about progress made in global health than global progress overall.

Overall, emerging powers and LMICs/LICs continue to be more positive than donor countries about health progress.
